From Korean Farms to Nepal's Pride: A Pig Farmer's Global Journey Home
Rohit Singh Ale, now 42, embarked on a journey to South Korea in search of employment opportunities. His destination: a pig farm where he spent five years honing his skills and learning the intricacies of pig farming. This international exposure equipped him with the knowledge and experience that would later prove invaluable in his entrepreneurial journey.
After completing his tenure in South Korea, Ale returned to his homeland, Nepal, with a clear vision: to start his own pig farming business. He leased 4 kathhas of land in Tilottama Municipality, Ward No. 16, Madhwalya, and established Bijaya Pig Farm. Starting modestly with just 16 pigs, his farm has since grown to house 140 pigs. This growth is a testament to his ability to apply the foreign technology and skills he acquired abroad to his local venture.
The journey was not without its challenges. Market saturation led to fluctuating demand for pork, putting pressure on his business. However, Ale's determination saw him through these tough times. Initially, he sold 20 to 25 kilograms of pork daily, a figure that has now risen to around 100 kilograms. His resilience in the face of market challenges highlights his entrepreneurial spirit and commitment to his business.
Support from the Daayitwa Rural Enterprise Acceleration Program (REAP) in collaboration with Tilottama Municipality, played a crucial role in Ale's success which provided him with opportunities that bolstered his skills, resources, mindset, and networks.
Today, Bijaya Pig Farm is valued at between NPR 4 million to 5 million, a significant increase from its initial investment of NPR 4.8 million. Ale's farm not only contributes to the local economy but also supports the community. He has created employment opportunities, helping to foster local economic development.
Rohit Singh Ale's journey from South Korea to Nepal is a powerful example of how skills acquired abroad can be leveraged to build successful enterprises at home. Despite challenges, his perseverance and the support from REAP enabled him to build a thriving business. Ale's story is not just about personal success; it is also about giving back to the community and fostering local entrepreneurship.
