From Poultry to Prosperity: How One Woman's Innovative Farming Transformed a Village
In the remote village of Tilottama, Bina Kumari Pun's story is one of resilience, innovation, and an unwavering commitment to transforming her community through agriculture and animal husbandry. Her journey began ten years ago when she received Integrated Pest Management (IPM) training from Caritas Nepal. What started as an educational opportunity has now evolved into a thriving enterprise that has significantly impacted her family’s livelihood and the local economy.
Bina had been involved in poultry farming in her village for several years, but it was the IPM training that equipped her with the skills and confidence to diversify her efforts. In 2021 AD, she decided to commercialize her farming activities, expanding into broiler chicken farming, mushroom cultivation, and pig farming. These ventures, rooted in the skills she acquired through the training, have not only bolstered her income but have also turned her into a recognized entrepreneur in her community.
One of Bina's most remarkable achievements is her ability to adapt her farming practices to seasonal changes. During the cold winter months, she converts her poultry farm into a mushroom cultivation center, ensuring that her farm remains productive year-round. This innovative approach allows her to maximize the use of her 27x75 foot farm, which she has been utilizing seasonally.
Bina's determination to make the most of her resources is evident in her approach to mushroom farming. After one season of mushroom cultivation, rather than leaving the farm idle, she meticulously cleans the area and prepares it for the next cycle of cultivation. This practice not only optimizes the use of her farm but also contributes significantly to her income. Last winter, she invested NPR 465,000 in mushroom farming and reaped a harvest that generated an impressive NPR 1.4 million in revenue.
Her success did not stop there. Bina has also constructed a pig farm and an external mushroom tunnel alongside her poultry farm, further diversifying her sources of income. The earnings from these ventures have become the primary source of income for her family, providing financial stability and security. To date, she has invested between NPR 3.5 to 4 million in building her farm's infrastructure, a testament to her dedication and long-term vision.
What sets Bina apart is her ability to navigate challenges with creativity and resilience. The land she farms on is unregistered, which limits her access to traditional bank loans or mortgages. However, instead of being deterred, she has chosen to reinvest the income generated from her farm back into its growth and development. This self-sustaining model has ensured a steady stream of income, allowing her to continue expanding her enterprise.
Bina credits much of her success to the support and guidance provided by the Rural Enterprise Acceleration Program (REAP). The program has not only equipped her with technical skills and knowledge but also emphasized the importance of mindset, entrepreneurial cultural values, process, and innovation in business. Reflecting on her journey, Bina shares, "I have become stronger and more confident in pursuing entrepreneurship now." With the insights and networks gained through the REAP program, she is more determined than ever to expand her production and generate more employment opportunities. The technical and financial support from REAP has not only enhanced Bina’s farm but also fostered an entrepreneurial ecosystem in her community, inspiring many women to follow in her footsteps.
Bina Kumari Pun's story is a powerful example of how dedication, continuous learning, and the ability to adapt can transform lives and communities. Her journey from a local farmer to a successful entrepreneur is an inspiration to many, illustrating the potential of rural entrepreneurship to drive economic resilience and sustainable development. Through her work, Bina continues to sow the seeds of progress, ensuring a brighter future for herself, her family, and her community.
