Bhuminanda Rai

When Turning Back was the Only Way Forward

Bhuminanda Rai knows what it means to face tough odds—and to rise anyway. Losing his father as a young teen, growing up feeling overlooked in his own community, many would’ve quietly accepted a hard life. But not Bhuminanda. He made a choice: to turn his struggles into strength, to come home with a vision, and to build a future rooted in his community’s soil. This is his story of grit, growth, and giving back.

Bhuminanda, 36, from Aiselukharka Rural Municipality, faced financial hardships early on, but he never lost faith in hard work. After finishing his Bachelor’s in Humanities, he left home in search of better opportunities. For seven years, he worked as a district coordinator and electoral trainer for an INGO, traveling across over 40 districts in Nepal. Later, he went to Qatar hoping to support his family, but despite long hours and hard labor, he felt unfulfilled. The income abroad couldn’t match the satisfaction of creating something meaningful close to home.

After over a decade away, Bhuminanda returned with a clear purpose: to convert his past struggles into opportunities for his community. Having seen farmers and entrepreneurs succeed using local resources in other districts, he was determined to do the same. It pained him to see fertile land lying unused in Aiselukharka.

Using his savings, Bhuminanda founded Sagarmatha Agro Farm, growing vegetables like tomatoes, garlic, ginger, chili, turmeric, and pepper. He also expanded into livestock—raising hens, pigs, and fish—to diversify his income and meet local demand. Even while working as an employment assistant for his municipality, Bhuminanda dedicates every free moment to nurturing his farm.

His journey took a leap forward when he joined Daayitwa’s Growth Entrepreneurship and Employment Promotion (GEEP) program through his local municipality and agricultural department. The training didn’t just teach him how to increase production—it taught him how to be strategic. Bhuminanda learned to diversify his crops, plan carefully according to market needs, and stand out where many farmers grow the same products.

Financial challenges remain, but Bhuminanda dreams big. He plans to invest in modern technology to boost productivity and expand his farm’s reach. Recently, he added pig farming to address a shortage in his community and believes that with continued effort and support, greater success is within reach.

Today, Bhuminanda sees himself as more than a farmer; he’s a beacon of hope for rural Nepal. He imagines a future where young people don’t have to leave home for low-paying work abroad but can build thriving livelihoods locally. He knows that with the right training, support, and government assistance, rural entrepreneurship can transform communities.

Bhuminanda Rai’s story is a powerful reminder that strength combined with vision and hard work can turn struggle into opportunity—right where you belong.

“I see myself as more than a farmer today. I dream big and plan to invest in modern technology to expand my farm’s reach.”
