Kneading Change: How Utsav Transformed His Return into Opportunity
Utsav Kafle’s journey is a powerful story of returning home, overcoming doubt, and building something meaningful from the ground up. Originally from Myagde, Utsav left for Saudi Arabia in search of better opportunities. However, his hopes soon collided with harsh realities—he was deceived by a promised agent and ended up working in a bread manufacturing company under difficult conditions. After two and a half years in that challenging environment, Utsav made a courageous decision: to come back home to Nepal. He realized that starting a business in his own country was not only safer but also more fulfilling than risking his life abroad.
Despite the disappointment he faced abroad, the most challenging part was overcoming the skepticism of those around him after his return. Many advised him to move to a bigger city if he truly wanted to succeed. But Utsav was determined to stay connected to his community. Together with his wife, Sharmila Lamshal, he founded Brother’s Bakery—a business that was more than just a place to bake bread. For Utsav, it was a way to create a shared space for friends, neighbors, and brothers from Myagde, strengthening bonds in his hometown.
Located near Prithvi Highway, the bakery quickly became a popular stop, attracting customers from the village and surrounding areas. Utsav’s shop offers a variety of baked goods—cakes, donuts, bread—all of which have won the hearts of many. From birthdays to weddings, events bring steady orders, and with the introduction of a home delivery service, demand has only grown stronger. Today, Brother’s Bakery boasts an annual turnover of 15 lakh rupees and a monthly income of 50,000. For Utsav, the real reward is running a business he loves, alongside his wife, while staying close to his family.
Starting seven years ago with an initial investment of 5 lakh rupees on machinery and supplies, Utsav has steadily grown his bakery into a thriving enterprise. Customer satisfaction is at the heart of his success. “The customers who buy our bakery items always come back for more and give us positive feedback,” he says proudly.
Utsav’s unwavering optimism and hard work caught the attention of the Growth Entrepreneurship and Employment Promotion (GEEP) program, where he was selected as one of the top 20 entrepreneurs from his rural municipality. Through GEEP, he has connected with like-minded business owners, expanding his network beyond his immediate circle. This vibrant community continues to inspire him to take Brother’s Bakery to new heights.
Utsav Kafle’s story is a beacon of hope for young people who dream of staying and thriving in their own communities. His example shows that with determination and a positive outlook, it is possible to turn skills into success right at home—building a life that is both rewarding and deeply connected to where you belong.
