From Lemon Trees to Local Leader: A Journey from Resilience to Empowerment

Nestled in the hills of Palpa, Nepal, Goma Bhandari's journey from novice farmer to successful entrepreneur is an attestation to resilience and entrepreneurial spirit.

Raised in a family that emphasized education, Goma initially had little farming experience. However, circumstances pushed her into agriculture to support her family's income. With determination and the guidance of her father-in-law, she ventured into commercial farming, experimenting with various crops before discovering the resilience and profitability of lemon trees.

Goma's path was fraught with challenges. In the early days, wildlife threatened their crops, and skepticism from neighbors added to the hurdles. Undeterred, she and her husband, Hum Nath, persisted, eventually focusing on lemon cultivation. Recognizing the untapped potential in Nepal's lemon market, they expanded their lemon orchards, defying initial doubts and gradually gaining traction in local markets.

The opportunity to participate in Daayitwa's Rural Enterprise Acceleration Program (REAP) was a turning point. Through REAP, Goma gained crucial business skills, market insights, and access to financing, propelling her business to new heights. By 2022, their annual income had soared from Rs. 40,000 to Rs. 1.7 million.

Today, Bhandari Lemon Farm stands as an example of success in Palpa. With annual sales exceeding 9 tonnes of lemons and diversified products like lemon pickles and concentrated juice, Goma's enterprise has not only thrived economically but has also created significant employment opportunities.

What started with seasonal employment for a few has now expanded to a team of up to 12 individuals, contributing to local livelihoods and empowering the community.

Beyond business success, Goma is deeply involved in community development. She has served as the chair of a local women's agricultural cooperative, empowering other women to venture into agriculture and become financially independent. Her leadership extends beyond her farm, actively participating in school management committees and advocating for educational initiatives.

Looking ahead, Goma is committed to enhancing her farm's productivity through innovative technologies and sustainable practices. She aims to integrate modern farming techniques to further increase yield and quality, ensuring competitiveness in the market. Her success story and dedication have earned her the admiration of her community, where she is affectionately known as 'Kagati Didi', a symbol of resilience and female entrepreneurship in rural Nepal.

Goma Bhandari's journey embodies the transformative power of resilience, innovation, and community support in overcoming challenges and achieving sustainable growth. As she continues to lead by example, her impact resonates far beyond the lemon orchards of Palpa, inspiring aspiring entrepreneurs and empowering women in rural Nepal to pursue their dreams and contribute to local development.

Her journey from novice farmer to respected entrepreneur underscores the profound impact of determination and community collaboration in fostering economic empowerment and sustainable development in rural areas. Goma Bhandari's story serves as an inspiration not only locally but also globally, showcasing the potential of small-scale enterprises to drive positive change and create lasting impact in their communities.
