Tanka Nath Ghimire's journey from a small village in Nepal to owning and operating the renowned Ranimahal Resort in Awal, Palpa, is an example of perseverance and entrepreneurial spirit.
At the age of 15, Tanka embarked on his first trip outside Nepal, accompanying his uncle to Mumbai. His initial years were marked by hard labor as a dishwasher in a bustling restaurant, driven by a single goal: to earn enough to support his family.
The path was arduous in Mumbai, where low wages and strenuous work challenged Tanka. Undeterred, he returned to Nepal briefly before venturing abroad again, this time to Saudi Arabia and later to Qatar. These years abroad were transformative, teaching Tanka the value of hard work and financial management. Despite facing challenges like low salaries and tough working conditions, he persevered, sending regular remittances back home and visiting his family periodically.
After almost 15 years abroad, Tanka decided to return to Nepal for good. However, the transition wasn't easy. Limited capital and skepticism from locals posed initial hurdles.
Yet Tanka resolutely invested in a poultry farm, which faced setbacks but eventually thrived. The pivotal moment came when Tanka and his wife Laxmi hosted stranded foreigners in their home, sparking the idea for their own venture.
With determination and borrowed funds, Tanka ventured into the hospitality sector, establishing Ranimahal Fishing Resort amidst challenging conditions with no motorable roads. Initial skepticism turned into admiration as the resort gained popularity for its clean accommodations and locally sourced organic food. Tanka's vision and hard work gradually paid off, attracting more visitors and enhancing local tourism.
Beyond personal success, Tanka's entrepreneurial journey has significantly impacted his community. The resort not only provides employment opportunities but also sources its supplies locally, benefiting neighboring businesses. Tanka's commitment to using his success to inspire local youths has shifted mindsets about migration, encouraging them to explore opportunities within Nepal.
Tanka's involvement in the Daayitwa Rural Entrepreneurship Acceleration Program (REAP) played a crucial role in scaling his business. The program provided technical support, mentorship, and a platform to refine his business strategies. Through REAP, Tanka enhanced his marketing skills and expanded his network, further bolstering Ranimahal Resort's success.
Today, Ranimahal Resort stands as a beacon of sustainable tourism in Palpa, generating significant revenue and contributing to the local economy. Tanka envisions further expansion and continuous improvement, aiming to attract more tourists and create additional job opportunities in the region.
